Is an IUD Right For Me?

Your reasons are your own, but you know that now is not the time for an unplanned pregnancy. As you research your options, it’s important to find a birth control method that’s both effective and fits your lifestyle.

Our team here at Marion Ob/Gyn, under the expert direction of Dr. David Foulkes, works with women to help them achieve their goals in every stage of life. If pregnancy isn’t in the cards for you at the moment, we offer a wide range of birth control options, including IUDs.

Here’s a look at how IUDs work and the many benefits of this birth control solution.

Two approaches to stopping pregnancy

When it comes to birth control options, the methods are largely divided between hormonal and barrier.

With the first, we use hormones to control your ovulation so that you don’t release eggs that can be fertilized. With the second, we provide a barrier between your eggs and sperm, preventing conception.

The first advantage of using an IUD is that there are two types that cover both of these bases.

An IUD is a T-shaped device that we place inside your uterus. With hormonal IUDs, such as Skyla® and Liletta®, the devices release hormones into your system that regulate your ovulation.

If you’d prefer not to alter your hormones, we offer the Paraguard® system, which uses copper to repel sperm.

Proven efficacy

Whatever IUD you choose, the good news is that they’re very good at their jobs. Both the hormonal and copper IUDs offer 99% efficacy rates, which means you’re well-protected against an unwanted pregnancy.

Ease of use

Another benefit that many of our patients love is that IUDs are incredibly easy to use. When you come in, we can easily insert the IUD during a quick and painless in-office procedure.

Once inserted, you don’t have to give your birth control another thought, which isn’t the case with other methods, such as the daily birth control pill or on-the-spot solutions like diaphragms or condoms.

Long-term protection

Depending on the IUD you choose, these devices offer anywhere from three to 10 years of protection.

Reversible birth control

Another advantage of an IUD is that this type of birth control is completely reversible. Should you come to a time when you do want to get pregnant, we simply remove your IUD, and you can get started.

No STD protection

As with many other birth control methods, an IUD does not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The best ways to safeguard against STDs is to use condoms or practice abstinence.
