How You Can Have a Smooth Summer Pregnancy

Your body undergoes incredible changes during pregnancy as you nurture a growing life. The hot summer months can amplify the toll of pregnancy on your body, but there are steps you can take to make your pregnancy easier, allowing you to better enjoy this wonderful journey.

At Marion Ob/Gyn Inc., Dr. David Foulk and our experienced team of obstetric specialists have helped scores of women in our community build the families of their dreams through excellent pregnancy care

As part of our care, we want to ensure that both you and your baby benefit from a smooth pregnancy. With that in mind, we’ve pulled together a few summer pregnancy tips.

Hydrate, and then hydrate some more

One of the most important things you should be doing during a summer pregnancy is to stay well-hydrated. When the temperatures go up, your body loses moisture very quickly as you sweat it out.

We recommend that you drink at least eight glasses of water a day (10 is even better) to help keep you and your child properly hydrated.

A little spritzing goes a long way

Beat the heat this summer by cooling down with a nice spray bottle of water, and keep one with you at all times. This quick little cooldown may not be the same as jumping into a pool, but it can be a lifesaver wherever you are, from the supermarket to the gym.

Avoid the heat

A spray bottle of water may help you cool down, but why not avoid some of the hotter hours of the day altogether? The temperatures in Ohio can soar in July and August, and even into September, so we advise choosing indoor activities during the peak heat hours of 10am to 4pm.

Exercise with caution

If you enjoy exercise, we urge you to continue your routine, but be mindful that heat adds an enormous amount of stress to your body. During the really hot days of summer, put your exercise regimen on hold and spend some time resting and relaxing — which can do wonders for your body, too.

Go with the flow

With high temperatures, clothing that restricts or clings to you isn’t doing you any favors where comfort is concerned. Stick to loose clothing that allows more airflow between your body and the material.

Shake things up

A great way to load up on important nutrients and stay cool is to add smoothies to your daily diet (with ice). Smoothies are incredibly versatile. You can make one that’s fruit- or vegetable-based, depending upon your mood.

Or mix them up by throwing a little spinach or kale in with your berries. Whatever your tastes, ice-cold smoothies provide welcome relief against the heat and deliver a nutritional punch that benefits you and your unborn child.

Avoid those swollen ankles

During pregnancy, it’s not uncommon for your ankles to swell, which can be heightened during the summer months. To keep the swelling at bay, we recommend that you elevate your feet throughout the day.

Compression stockings can also help keep your circulation flowing, and sleeping on your left side relieves the pressure on one of your main veins, which can help keep swelling down.

Keep up with prenatal care

Important at any time of year, comprehensive prenatal care is one of the best ways to ensure a smooth pregnancy.

During these all-important visits, we not only check your health and the health of your unborn child. We also provide you with valuable tips like the ones listed above to help you weather your pregnancy during any season.
